2020 Bathroom Trends

Master Account • October 20, 2020

The demand for new master baths in Chattanooga is increasing. Now that many families in Chattanooga are spending almost all of their time at home, they have a new appreciation that a bathroom can offer so much more than function. A master bath can be a refuge from Zoom fatigue, a wellness center and a room to spend a few minutes devoid of email, texts and family members, all to yourself. That’s why the results of a recent 2020 Houzz.com bathroom trend study does not come as a surprise.

A Desire for a Makeover

Most homeowners nationally and in Chattanooga want to change their master bath style when they renovate. The Houzz study found 69% of homeowners perceived their existing bath as projecting “an old and outdated look.” The primary reason homeowners in Chattanooga want a complete makeover is to achieve a current vibe with clean lines. The most popular design trend is modern, favored by 20% of homeowners in the Houzz study, followed by transitional motifs (19%) and contemporary (18%). Traditional motifs were favored by 12% of homeowners, and 5% of survey respondents opted for a farmhouse design.

Health and Wellness Take Center Stage

More than 40% of renovating homeowners converted their master bath into a space for relaxation. 55% of Houzz study respondents reported that soaking in a tub helps them relax. Conversely, 54% of respondents enjoy taking long showers.

Shower appeal is growing. Nearly 50% of homeowners removed the tub during the remodel, opting for larger and multifunctional showers.

High Tech Fixtures

Nearly 50% of faucets and more than a third of toilets in renovated baths feature advanced technology that includes increased water efficiency and finger-proof finishes on faucets and self-cleaning toilet systems with heated seats.

Accentuated Spaces

Accent walls are hot in bath remodels in Chattanooga. Nearly 40% of remodels cited in the Houzz study featured accent walls in the master bath. 19% of homeowners opt for an accent wall inside the shower; 18% placed an accent wall outside the shower. Using different surface materials, such as tile or stone, was the most popular method to create an accent wall in the master bath, followed by colors, patterns or textures that differ from the rest of the bath. The most popular accent wall color was blue.

Light Up Your World

80% of homeowners renovating a master bath improved their lighting, and that makes sense because lighting affects how a room looks and feels.

Upgrading to soft-close cabinets and drawers can significantly enhance the functionality and longevity of your kitchen, bathroom, or any space with cabinetry. One of the most immediate benefits of soft-close mechanisms is the reduction of noise. Traditional cabinets and drawers often close with a loud bang, which can be particularly jarring in a busy household. Soft-close technology ensures that drawers and doors glide smoothly and shut quietly, creating a more peaceful and serene environment. This feature is especially appreciated in open-concept living spaces where kitchen noise can easily permeate throughout the home. Another major advantage of soft-close cabinets and drawers is their contribution to the longevity of your cabinetry. The gentle closing action reduces the wear and tear on the hinges and drawer slides, preventing the damage that can occur from slamming. Over time, this means fewer repairs and replacements, preserving the beauty and functionality of your cabinetry for years to come. Additionally, soft-close mechanisms help protect the contents inside the drawers and cabinets from shifting and potentially breaking, which is particularly beneficial for delicate items like glassware and china. Finally, soft-close cabinets and drawers add a touch of luxury and modernity to your home. They are a sought-after feature in high-end cabinetry and can increase the overall value of your property. This technology demonstrates attention to detail and a commitment to quality, which can be a selling point if you decide to put your home on the market. Moreover, soft-close systems are a user-friendly addition, making it easier for people of all ages, including children and seniors, to use the cabinets and drawers without exerting much effort. Investing in soft-close technology is not just about convenience; it's about enhancing the overall experience and longevity of your living space.

At this year's KBIS, a spotlight shone on health and wellness, with numerous plumbing manufacturers unveiling innovative reverse osmosis systems capable of eliminating up to 90% of contaminants from drinking water. Complementing this focus on healthier living, new products designed to enhance shower experiences took center stage, promoting well-being and beauty through rejuvenating skin treatments and muscle-relaxing massage therapies. Echoes of the 1960s reverberated through grooved channels and faucets designed to complement Shaker cabinets, while a wide range of bridge faucets exuded vintage charm. Meticulous craftsmanship garnered attention, with one faucet manufacturer earning acclaim for its unique faucet handles crafted from Murano glass, each bearing its own distinct character. Intricate hand-hammered details, knurled textures, and detailed facets adorned faucets, sinks, and fixtures, showcasing an unwavering commitment to detail. A shift towards natural hues stole the spotlight, particularly among countertop manufacturers, who unveiled an array of cream, taupe, and gold-toned surfaces. This trend reflects homeowners' departure from sterile, all-white palettes towards softer, warmer tones, inviting a sense of comfort and serenity into their homes. Moreover, countertop and surface material manufacturers unveiled environmentally conscious and sustainable options, including tiles crafted from 100% recycled materials and quartz products engineered to minimize their environmental footprint by significantly reducing silica content. Innovation in appliances also took center stage, with manufacturers unveiling sleek matte black and satin stainless-steel finishes, alongside smart features that redefine convenience. It’s an unparalleled spa-like luxury experience. The right light.
